At Kaiseimachi (開成町) close to Odawara (小田原 ), a festival (あじさい祭 ajisai matsuri) is held in early June to celebrate the flowering of 10,000 hydrangea bushes (紫陽花 ajisai) that line the local rice fields. In the distance, the mountains of Yaguradake ( 矢倉岳 ) and Myojingadake (明神ヶ岳) form a hazy blue backdrop for the flooded rice fields and the hydrangea bushes — a pastoral scene in an urban area.
