In the bicentennial of the third French invasion of Portugal, the municipality of Mafra organized a trip to the times of construction of the Lines of Torres. On 20 June 2010, at 16h00, the public was invited to visit the Fort Zambujal and travel back two centuries through the historical recreation "The French are coming! The construction of the Lines of Torres (1810). »


For 200 years, Portuguese and English joined in the mission to protect Portugal from the French invasion. The power of guns and bayonets, gave space to the strength of the pick and shovel in the effort of thousands of peasants and soldiers who built lines to protect the city of Lisbon.

Among the 152 bunkers that were built, the work stands out in work 95, the Fort Zambujal, one of the strongholds which involved a great constructive effort.

It was a great bustle of preparations for the construction of the fort: Teams of workers excavate the moat and prepare all buildings, local peasants supported in the preparation of food, Portuguese soldiers and British guide the work ...
