  • ROVER 215 WAS A PILE OF CRAP, 145Hp...big deal !! the Triumph PI in the UK had 150Hp, I wish people would stop thinking that the Rover 215 and BOP 215 was a good engine, its 1960s junk...thats why Buick dumped it in 63

  • I would have to agree with you. The Rover V8 was plagued with problems & was an underperformer. Buick improved it & even a turbo charged Oldmobile Jetfire engine was made producing 300lb of torque. These motors were used mostly in British swaps because it was compact.

  • WOW! what a thrill i am impressed. that exhaust note. the acceleration. i love what you have done.

  • Thanks, I hope to put together a longer better video.

  • @bugeyev8 Its not all about the engines. Brittish sports cars handle FAR better than american heavyweights. Dont argue against that and also 60s is not junk becuase thats when the Jaguar e type came out. [one of the best ever engines and the best looking car ever [said enzo ferrari]

  • @sootyferrari65 I have no idea what you are talking about.. and this comment makes no sense its not really even related to my comment.but.... the GT6 and TR6 engines were junk as with the spitfire and the big pile of crap was rhe stag v8

  • @bugeyev8 So the Jaguar straight six, Lamborghini V12, Triumph GT6 and Ferrari V12 are all 60s junk? That makes good sense

  • I think you need a bit of a history lesson. Yes the RV8 is not the greatest, but in its day is was fairly good. Compact/lightweight, even by todays standards. It was also, as per all American engines very undertuned in stock trim. In 1977 a 6.6 TransAm made 175hp & a 5.0 Mustang 134hp! The 3.5 EFI in the Rover SD1 made 190hp. The block can support 6.0 litres displacement and still weigh the same make 450hp. Also, you might want to Google why Buick dumped it ;)

  • The reason why they scrapped it was cause there were too many vested interests in the steel industry, something the buick 215 lump wasn't. When you say 145hp, that was about right when you look at other yank engines of the time!

  • yes, i have read up on it in the last 6 months. The development program was delayed by one thing or other for years and then after leyland took over it was rushed to production before all the issues were worked out. Not sure I'd want to work on one given how cramped the engine bay is. and yes there were supply problems everywhere in the BL organization. On general principle, I would rather push an MG than drive a Triumph.

  • Yes Mr Clarkson... The Stag V8 was not 2 4cyls welded together. It was related to the Dolly/TR7 engines but actually shared very little - which can be said to be less than ideal.

Triumph had already developed the engine well before the BL era with Rover, so it was not going to heave all that investment in the bin - and Rover had enough trouble satisfying their own demand of the 3.5 let alone satisfy other companies. Anyway, Stag V8 is fine if well maintained - didn't happen back then much.

  • Yes, we know that.

Strictly speaking, it wasn't "under licence"; Rover bought the lot from Buick, including the licence.

The B in Rover P5B stood for Buick and was the V8 version.
