Paint the Town Red with Tomatoes

Tomato throwers painted one Spanish town red for an annual tomatina festival. In the end the whole town and everyone in it looks to be covered in tomato sauce. Here's more.


STORY:
About 40,000 people turned up for this event but they don't wear their best clothes. Their intention is to splatter everyone else with ripe tomatoes. In fact they hurl more than 130 tons of squishy missiles at each other.

This is being done to honor the town's patron saint, St. Luis Bertran.

The famous festival attracts thousands from around the world and leaves the eastern Spanish town in a pool of tomato sauce.

People even wear goggles and shopkeepers put up plastic to protect their property from the messy onslaught. Later, local residents helped cool down and clean the tomato throwers by hosing them off.
