HSH Prince Louis II of Monaco, son and heir of HSH Prince Albert I, was born in 1870 and from the time he was a young man was known as the "Soldier Prince" as his father had been the "Sailor Prince". He served in North Africa in the French Foreign Legion and during World War I served with great distinction in the French army, rising to the rank of Brigadier General and earning numerous decorations. During World War II he was sympathetic to his old comrade Marshal Petain but had to walk a fine line. Changes in the succession law allowed his grandson, Rainier III, to succeed him upon his death in 1949.
