Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) is a strong willed widow who lives in Victorian England with her daughter (Natalie Wood). They move to Gull Cottage in a small English seaside village. There is a catch with her new home thought, the ghost of sea Captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison) still resides there. They come to an arrangement to share the cottage. When her finances become low the capatain comes up with the idea for her to write his memoirs. When she visits a London publisher to try and sell her book she runs into cad Miles Fairley (George Sanders) who is taken with her. It seems our ghost is now jealous.
