http://www.about-salmonella.com Food Safety Attorney Bill Marler explains Salmonella infection - where it comes from and how it can affect you.
Bill Marler: Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne bacteria that we face in America. Some 4 million Americans are sickened by Salmonella every year. It causes somewhere between 500 -- 600 deaths throughout the United States. It is a fecal bacteria found in all sorts of animals from frogs to snakes to chickens to rats -- all of those animals can have Salmonella and in fact do.
Salmonella symptoms come relatively quickly -- 12 to 48 hours after ingesting it - and it's horrible cramping and diarrhea, generally not bloody. The main risk you have with Salmonella is dehydration, which can cause a number of cascading problems for somebody who gets severely dehydrated.
I take the position -- at least as it relates to food that's in my home -- to handle everything with extreme caution. In restaurants it's much more difficult, because you're not in the back, making sure that everything's being done properly and cross contamination's not happening. And we're eating out so much now as a society.
So all of those things you can be aware of -- going to restaurants that you feel comfortable with and handling products in your home safely.
