A scientific poster from PICC Excellence that teaches clinicians how to better disinfect IV catheter connectors was featured at the recent APIC conference. The poster explains use of a device called a disinfection cap, which may allow a reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs).
Nancy L. Moureau, RN, BSN, CRNI, CPUI, VA-BC , founder and CEO of PICC Excellence, represented the poster at the annual meeting of APIC, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).
A disinfection cap is used to supplement manual disinfection of IV connectors. Several studies show that the manual method, which is widely used and involves scrubbing connectors with 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA), is subject to variation and noncompliance. The cap ensures thorough disinfection.
