Follow me while I build a fast (less than 2 hours!) and CHEAP (less than $30!!) green screen for my video production.

Things to know:
1) I used 1/2" pipe because I needed this to be lightweight for my travels. If you want durability and stability, I'd go with the 1". All the methods stay the same, just check your measurements!

2) Don't forget to iron your screen when you're done sewing it. Getting all those little creases out will remove shadows, and thus improve your effects results.

3) Light is key! I'm only using 1100 watts, because that all I have right now. What I want, and would recommend is at least 1000 watts on the green screen alone and another 500 watts on the subject. And that's with the advantage of a small room with light coloured walls that are relecting the light. Worklights are cheap. Get them at Walmart or your hardware store of choice. Just remember these things get hot, and make your room hot. Turn them off when you aren't filming!

4) To make really stable and easy legs for a TRULY freestanding greenscreen, find these awesome 4-way pipe fittings. They aren't used in plumbing (they don't meet code) so you probably have to order them. The parts are cheap, shipping isn't. :( http://www.flexpvc.com/cart/agora.cgi?product=PVC-4-ways
Just replace the bottom corners with theses babies, and stick your 4 spare 1' lengths in them and BAM! Instant stability, no math or science required!

  • Fantastic, cannot wait to see how you put the green screen to good use.

  • I've got some ideas, have no fear! Thanks for watxhing and commenting!

  • OMG! Great job! I LOVE the sewing machine! :D

  • Thanks!! Glad you liked it! Purple sewing machine for the win!!!

  • Nice job! As a longer term solution than the pins, I'd suggest velcro straps, the kind they sell as cable wraps. Stitch one end down to the fabric, and then you can tighten it around the PVC and anchor it down to pull the fabric smooth.

  • I like the velcro idea! I saw a screen someone did with cloth ties that worked really well, but that just takes time and energy I don't have right at the moment! I figure I'll try a few things see what works best... thanks for watching and commenting!! ;)
