http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/dinnerwiththepresident Directors Sabiha Sumar and Sachithanandam Sathananthan sit down with former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, before he resigns from office, to address his ideas of a democratized society in their country. The directors engage Musharraf in conversation about his political past and vision for the future and ask the bold question—how does an army general plan to establish democracy in Pakistan?

In this clip, at an intimate dinner, then-President Pervez Musharraf unfolds his vision for democracy in Pakistan.

DINNER WITH THE PRESIDENT premieres Tuesday, October 28 on Independent Lens, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide.

  • Islam the total system of life? since when? how will you describe the distribution of wealth in context of Islam?

  • I suggest that you too have a good look at Pakistan's economy the last 9 years under Mush and Shortcut Aziz. Read what think tanks said about consumerism, borrowing and foreign aid in the absence of building the basics of the economy. The whole world was in an economic upspin until late but Pakistan didn't really grow because our military doesn't know about economics. Why can't you let them focus on defending our borders and let the burocrats do what they're supposed to.

  • In Pakistan whether its a political war between the political parties, politicians or destruction of national property or wealth, its eventually a common/poor man who is forced to bear all the dogmatism. Whether Horse Trading to strengthen the rule, hypocrisy or violating the law its eventually the poor who are forced to bear all the dogmatism of the govt & the govt departments. Now the time has come when eventually the educated class is waking up and we must expect a brighter tomorrow.

  • I felt that the film was "boldly awkward". From the boring dinner to the drunken beach party to the not-so-productive mud-flunging with the tribal leaders. Then they are going to ask the peasants about their view on democracy, like they were doing just as well as the people they filmed before. Democracy in a Shairi'ah-based country, and still they manage not to pay the poor's due. This was not a film on democracy, it was a film on confronting people about the situation of a half-ass government.

  • A feudal society? An agrarian society? Well maybe, but many of them have the sophistication to understand mass defect and its implication. Maybe Japan is an agrarian society, but damn they have great technology. Maybe Pakistan is more than just a few war lords and farmers. Possibly its best not to comment on your country when youre distracted by eating good food.

  • thought provoking

  • Wrong.

  • Islam is a total system of life, it puts an enormous emphasis on gaining of knowledge. It is through knowledge that a person will fully realize the wonders of our Creator in nature and within ourselves. A Muslim is any person anywhere in the world whose obedience, allegiance, and loyalty are to God, the Lord of the Universe. Even if you are a Christian, it doesn't hurt to learn about 1.6 Billion Muslims who love and respect Jesus!

  • well they were given donation money that pakistan needs from america
