Alvin Straight is rolling on his lawn mower when the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) zooms by. He stops at their camp for the night and talks about being old.

The movie never explains that the bicycle riders are part of RAGBRAI, but as the movie takes place in Iowa they must be.

  • How about we all get together at Glenwood Sr. High on Saturday and argue about it for the next 7 days?

  • The movie was filmed in 1999 not 1994.

  • It's just a movie people. They don't say it was RAGBRAI... Although they might have used the idea of the ride in the movie....

  • @racekatt.... Sadly, yes... Alvin's house is just a grass lot now.

  • @bsc349 Seriously? I can't believe his house is gone.

  • not even close to Ragbrai. We only see fast riders, mostly in the right line. Everyone who has done Ragbrai knows that there are a lot of slow riders in the left lane, where they don't belong. And Alvin would have been been passed by them starting way before 6:00 am, because thats how some of them roll !!

  • It was not RAGBRAI. They paid a bunch of locals abot $50 each to ride the bikes. Alvin Straight's house was recently tore down because some idiots lit it on fire.

  • I love this movie, but that is not RAGBRAI. This was clearly filmed in the autumn, and RAGBRAI is always in July. Must be some other bike ride.

  • But this event took place in 1994 retrofltz. Meybe they had those numbers then. However, not important.

  • One thing that doesn't make sense, though. A lot of the bikers have numbers pinned to their backs. On RAGBRAI we don't wear numbers like that. Not even in 1999. Other than that it does look like RAGBRAI.
