Taiwan Cutting Back on Military

Taiwan is considering cutting its army by as much as a third as relations with China improve.

The Ministry of National Defense is studying a plan to slash the island's 275,000 troops over the next four years.

Since President Ma Ying-jeou took office in May the annual live-fire military exercises have also been cut back to every two years.

Though the annual budget has been cut by eight percent the military are still keeping an eye on their neighbors.

[Lisa Chi, Military Spokeswoman]:
"Our annual defense training on all fronts, using the necessary fuel and shells, are never short in any way. Although we are happy to see eased tensions across the strait, we will definitely follow the training agenda, and we will never relax."

President Ma's government has eased tension by signing trade and transit deals with Beijing.

Cutting back ? You must be kidding ! China is expanding her military and willing to spend more for military budget and hasn't let go Taiwan off its sight , and you guys want to scale down and cutting back military expenditure ?
