I will tell you why the film never won an Oscar. at the time, Warner bros. had the idea to destroy Sergio Leone's film by cutting away 90 minutes of the film. while the original masterpiece was shown at the Cannes film festival and was beloved by several critics, the "studio edited" version of the film was released all around the U.S and destroyed the masterpiece we know and loved today. when it was finally released onto home video in the 3 hour version, it finally was recognized as a classic.

I like this one better than the Godfather. By no means I intend to criticize Elizabeth McGovern, I do like the the younger Deborah ( played by Jennifer Connelly ) better.

    An awesome film.

It's not 4 and a half hours it's 3 hours and 40 mins if you buy the blu ray or dvd, the one released in America in 1984 was 90 minutes shorter than that (it didn't make much sense which is why it got bad reviews at the time), there is also an Italian version that is 4 hours 20 mins but yes it is worth watching (I would recommend that you buy the 229 min one that is on blu ray/DVD), you just need to pay attention to get the story.

In some ways, this movie reminds me of citizen kane. Not in terms of story and tone, but the vast array of inventive camera techniques and cinematic effects.

Don't make fun of Lord of the Rings, it deserves it's recognition, it's set in the most in depth fantasy world ever created.

Serge Leone and Kubrick were by far the greatest film directors in the world. They knew how to make a movie breathtaking and visually attractive. Even-though the movies were sometimes a bit slow or long, it never bothered me because they knew how to keep a crowd captivated, something that the film directors today don't know anymore. Let's face it, most of the movies nowadays are crap, because they miss the most essential part of a movie. Movies ought to be art and not only commercial succes.

Sergio Leone's only good movie. His westerns were just ripoffs from Kurosawa. If this movie would have been nominated in 1984's Oscars, it would not stand a chance vs Amadeus. Then again, Oscars don't really mean much in terms of quality movies.
