I like the comping exercise where you play the swing pattern (and hi hat on 2 & 4), but only play the snare on the 1, then the &. I usually leave a measure of just the ride and hi-hat pattern as a reminder of the temp. This can be done the same way with the bass drum. Then you can line up the snare hits with the bass. Finally, just pick what notes the snare will play, and which the bass will play in the measure(s). HAVE FUN!

Just a brilliant identification , analysis , diagnosis , and antidote to what is probably a musicians biggest barrier .... the dreaded musical plateau`s ... Peter is one of the best drummers on the planet but he is just as good at teaching as he is playing .... a genius , no doubt about it .
