One man's dream to help the entire world.
Wish Upon A Hero was first conceived by founder Dave Girgenti shortly after
the September 11th attacks on New York City. From his home in Cherry
Hill NJ, Girgenti watched as thousands of people posted pictures of missing
loved ones throughout the city. He thought there had to be a faster, more
organized way to connect people in need. That was the moment in which
the idea was born.
Less than five years later, Hurricane Katrina created a similar catastrophic
event in New Orleans where hundreds of thousands of people needed immediate
help. This time it wasn't just about locating loved ones. Hurricane
victims needed everything from healthcare services, food, fresh water,
clothing and shelter. It became clear that the world needed a hero.
That's when Mr. Girgenti created Wish Upon A Hero, an online community
that connects those in need (wishers) with those who can help (heroes).
Since the website's launch in 2007, over 80,000 wishes have been granted.
Wish Upon A Hero has become the world's largest social helping network.
At the heart of Wish Upon A Hero, is the belief that everyone can make
a difference in their community and in the world. The members are
comprised of businesses, organizations and individuals who are
passionate about helping.
Hero Awards Gala "The Oscars of Helping"
Wish Upon a Hero is hosting the 4th annual Hero Awards Gala on November
19, 2011. This annual event will recognize several people and organizations
who, throughout 2011, acted, donated, facilitated in some way, to
make wishes come true through Wish Upon a Hero. Many of these recipients
are everyday people who have done extraordinary things. More than
500 people will be present to honor these inspirational heroes.
