In the past shepherds in the Pyrenees used the Pyrenean Mountain Dog (Great Pyrenenees) to protect the herds against bears and wolves.
Great Pyrenees "Peluche du Mas de la Valiere" feels herself comfortable in the presence of a flock of goats. (Music: the Lonely Goatherd from The Sound of Music)

I grew up with 2 pyr's. the second one we had was the great granddaughter of our first pyr. I would have one now but my house and property are to small for a dog that big.
