Tourists climb 500 steps to the top in a hollow space Brunelleschi devised to make the dome lighter, therefore ultimately able to stand. Brunelleschi began something so important in this dome, something that changed the face of the World forever...it's rare to see a single moment in history, a single spark that begins an entire era. In a sense, this was the beginning of our modern times. It's unfortunate that his name isn't remembered along the names of Columbus, Galileo or Newton.
