Julie Walters has become a kind of brand - the best kind.
Give her a role with any substance and you know she'll
deliver a Bafta-worthy performance and leave the audience
damp-eyed. And so it proves here, in the moving true story
of Bath doctor Anne Turner. Having watched her husband
suffer a slow, undignified death, she was diagnosed with a
similar neurological condition. "Rotten bad luck," her character muses. Walters plays Turner as the best kind of
frank, feisty, upper-middle-class mum. "Let battle
commence," she cries as she sets about taking on the
illness she knows is incurable, but she soon decides she
should be allowed to take her own life with dignity, even if
UK law doesn't allow "assisted dying". It's a decision her
three grown-up children struggle to cope with. Sadly, their
characters are short-changed by Frank McGuinness's
script; far better is Harriet Walter as a Christian friend with
whom Turner has a searing confrontation over a last game
of chess. It's one of several shattering scenes in a drama
that forces us to think hard about some big questions.

  • I am glad that this has been publicised (it only just aired in NZ last night) Not enough people know about PSP and diseases like it because of their rarity and the issue of quality of life and a dignified death need to be addressed. The love and bravery shown by Anne and her family is both humbling and breath taking. I admire them so much. Thank you for posting this, I needed to watch it.

  • Im glad you like it ^^

I'm STILL bawling like a baby! Good-byes are the saddest parts of a story.

  • swiss television, did air, this move, to night.

and i have to say, one of the best movies, i have seen so far. specially the scene, with the cat, was moving.

  • I watched this in RE and I didn't cry as in tears running down my cheeks at any other scene BUT the one where she's saying goodbye to her cat. I don't know what it was, but as soon as she said "beautiful" I just broke down.

  • notice she tuck a bible out of her bag :D gonna need that in mah gcse's :S

  • I find this possibly the saddest program I have ever watched it dramatically changed my view on assisted suicide/euthanasia.

I believe now the law should be changed, because thinking about it myself I would like the OPTION to decide my fate.

I just hope i'd have her courage

  • My godmother has this disease, her partner died shortly before she was diagnosed also. This story hurts to watch because I've already watched someone I love go through this WITHOUT the option of making her OWN choice. The ignorance of people who do not "believe" in this choice angers me. Ask yourselves, what if it happened to you? Or someone you love dearly? If this film doesn't convince you, then you're heartless.

  • it's a beautiful film.

still makes me want to cry every time

so sad when she says bye to the cat :(

    great actress!

  • i thought it was extremely sad when she says goodbye to the woman
