Shelly Duvall's not the greatest actress (although Stanley Kubrick must've seen something he liked), but one of the ugliest? I think she's pretty, personally. It's in the eye of the beholder...to me, Julia Roberts is very overrated with her looks. Never have understood why some call her "America's Sweetheart".

in my opinion, it was a good directorial decision to cut out the part where he refers to her as "the old sperm bank" this way jack torrence abruptly brings about his mishap with his son and it looks more random, and therefore more repressed and aggressive.

I liked it the other way. Sorry. Only thing I wish Kubrick had done differently was left in the second-to-last scene where Wendy's told they couldn't find Jack's body.
