In October the Swiss bring the cows down from the mountains for the winter. It is a colourful celebration-the cows are adorned with flowers, ribbons and large bells and the Swiss people dress in native costume and embroidered shirts. Small wooden carts are decorated as well to carry milk cans and mountain dogs pull them along. Alpenhorns are played as they parade the cows through the streets and serve up squash soup, tartiflette and raclette accompanied by beer, wine and absinthe.
