President Obama said Thursday afternoon that the death of Moammar
Gadhafi marks the end of a long and painful chapter for Libya.
"Today we can definitively say the Gadhafi regime has come to an end,"
the president said. He did not confirm the death, but cited Libyan
officials' announcement of his killing.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, the president said the Libyan
people now have the opportunity to determine their own destiny and the
great responsibility to build a tolerant and democratic nation.
President Obama also called on Libyans to secure dangerous weapons and
respect human rights.
