I have many vintage bicycles and often come across the nightmare stubborn cotter pins which are not just tight and require rust eater i mean the ones which have fused themselves to the spindle and any ammount of hammering just squashes the soft metal pin even if you leave the bolt loosely attached. you can buy special press tools if you can find one and they cost around fifty pounds, but i always use my method now as even hammering close to a fully enclosed chain guard can be tragic if you clip the guard with your hammer.
