The Red-Tailed Hawk, also known as Buteo jamaicensis, makes its home throughout North America, reaching as far North as central Alaska and Canada, and as far South as the mountains of Panama. As can be seen in these two videos, hawks are carnivorous birds of prey, using their sharp beaks and curved talons to kill and consume the small animals that make up their diets.

Red-Tailed Hawks are the largest of their species, weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. The females are about 1/3 larger than the males and may have a wing span of up to 56 inches! Because of it's size and the long and slow turns it makes while soaring overhead, this hawk is easy to identify and beautiful to watch.

  • It´s a Red Tailed Hawk and "Hawk" is what you say if you are from the US. In Europe you call it "Rotschwanzbussard" (German)

  • Cool! That is really interesting. Does anyone else know how to say "Hawk" in any other languages?

  • @murphy13295 makes it back to his burrow as a big RedTail is applying its airbrakes{wings} and is trying to scoop the munk up in its talons{a miss} I'm just standing there feeling a bit stunned, relieved for the munk but a bit sorry the hawk missed a meal.Bird just turns its head a looks at me ,wouldn't call it a glare more of a "poker face" kinda like "Yeah ,so, whats it to you" was pretty cool. That Chipmunk got to be about half again as big as any other Munks in the area

  • I had finally gotten a wild chipmunk to come and take peanuts from my hand , feed him every evening when i got home from work. It would always keep one paw, on a finger of hand holding peanut to sense any movement that he didn't trust. So i'm feeding him one evening ,on my right my view is blocked by frame of the house . C'munk is feeding running back & forth stashing the peanuts when suddenly a blurr comes from the blind side of the house,I jump a bit and that little C'Munk just makes it

  • i think buteos are better :3

  • Only if red-tails were accipiters.

  • I saw one eating a pigeon the other day I didn't have my camera on me first time being that close to one

  • to add to wat WeimGirl said im pretty sure they are not pets that you take out to impress ur buddys and put away for a week before repeating.Laws are strict and you hav to fly the bird . the point of falconry which is wat this practice is called, is to train and HUNT with the bird, it is not for pet keeping!

  • good
