  • @viriatoist (reply 6) The whole point of heredity is that they don't have to do anything to earn it; the heir could be a lazy, drug-addicted bohemian, and you would still owe them your allegience; it wouldn't make any difference. The crown is hereditary, not good or bad personal characteristics, otherwise the Saxe-Coburg Gothas would have been gone by the 1850s (and many people were seriously discussing an end to monarchy during the reigns of George IV and William IV)

  • @viriatoist (reply 4) The only valid reason to value a hereditary head of state is if it is already in place, and the alternatives could be more trouble than they're worth. Deifying them is totally beneath the dignity of anyone who considers themself a free human being and British citizen.

  • @viriatoist (reply 3) What have detractors ever done? There are many republicans who are far more accomplished than you and most monarchists, and many who have served longer and in more difficulty circumstances in the military than members of the Royal Family do.

  • @viriatoist (reply 2) There have also been just as many feckless monarchs; the Royal Family was extremely lucky that the closet Nazi Edward VIII abdicated, and instead it was passed to Albert and thence to Elizabeth. To have such a long-lived, dedicated monarch, who is so well attuned to the rules of the game, has served Britain, or perhaps more accurately, the monarchy, very well.

  • @viriatoist I don't think you can really count the deeds of Richard I, since he was hardly English anyway. I think he spent about 8 months of his reign in England, and much of his life in France or the Levant.

Regarding the rest of them, I would expect absolutely no less, and the Royal Family knows it too. In exchange for the deference, the informal influence, the wealth, the social and political primacy, you are absolutely expected to serve in one way or another.

  • @fraizer57 Go play in traffic, jerkhole.

  • Prince Philip fought in WWII, Prince Andrew fought in the Falklands War, Prince Harry fought In the current Afghan war. A memorable Norman king of England, rightly remembered as the Lionheart (Coeur de Lion), fought to liberate the Holy Land from the Saracen infidel. What have the detractors of the British monarchy ever accomplished? In which wars have they fought? Wellington & Marlborough were lionhearted soldiers and brilliant statesmen, whereas anglophobes are pussyhearted, envious, cowards.
