Scum: Forfeiture of Privileges

The film ends with the governor informing the prisoners of their forfeiture of privileges until the damage is paid for, and ordering a silent prayer for the two dead inmates.

The governor and the screws look hard in the shot but I'll bet anything, once they get outside the borstal they all become miserable, self-hating nobodies. This is proved when Archer points out that the inmates pay for 'that daily humiliation' of not even being considered 'real' i.e. prison screws. Also notice how they never even joke or make small talk with each other. Even the governor probably only got his job because he once jerked off the Home Secretary when they were at Eton together

@TomthatiscalledTom I really got the impression that, although the posh governor probably lived comfortably, the screws had dreary personal lives, didn't earn that much and were generally bitter about their place in the world. You can imagine them spending a lot of evenings down the pub stewing over their pints.

@Edam3000 No, they just beat them to within an inch of their lives. Prison officers don't kill prisoners in this country. The "departed friend" was the kid who slashed his wrists after being raped in the greenhouse, he is the reason the riot began (they'd all had enough of the callousness of the screws)
