Nobody comes close to the Ramones. All due respect to Iggy, The Clash, etc... but Joey and the boys defined a generation...

@manickp don't forget about the stooges. they were around before the ramones and weren't exactly "punk rock" but they played a huge role in the development of the genre

Listen to it closely - it's not simplistic at ALL!
There are multiple grooves going on: Johnny's guitar playing straight against Dee Dee's more loose and samba-like bass runs and the drummer keeping some krautrock insistency throughout.
Actually, Dee Dee makes this. He was one superb bassist!
