I found these videos in my collection and now more than ever I think everyone should see the amazing beautiful work Lisandro and his group have created for all of us to enjoy and appreciate. Unfortunately the video quality is not the best but you can at least witness this group in action. This was my first introduction to the group and I was just amazed by their work and talent. They performed during a special event that recognizes Indigenous Rights Day in Guatemala. It was an honor to be in the presence of this group of people which allowed others to view the beauty of Mayan culture and traditions.

It is with great sadness that I have to share that on August 25, 2010, the Coordinator of the Centro Cultural Sotz'il, Leonardo Lisandro Guarcax from El Tablón Solola, was kidnapped, tortured and murdered. He was a Maya artist, teacher, spiritual guide and dancer who worked to promote Kaqchikel culture in Guatemala. Lisandro Guarcax is another victim of the gross impunity and injustices that occur on a daily basis on the streets of Guatemala. In May 2009, Ernesto and Carlos Emilio Guarcax Gonzlez, also members of el Centro Cultural Sotz'il Jay, were also assassinated.
