Dude, even in 1970 the US did not have the gold required to back the fiat at the time. It wasn't even close. Taking the dollar officially off the gold standard in 1971 was really just a formality and had been so for a long while prior.
I know it goes against the common rhetoric that 'we lost the gold standard in 1971', but it is the truth just the same.
If the US does go BK (and I believe it likely will not), it would have done so with a gold standard also.

The people just don't know whats going on...there was a guy who did a vid trying to sell a silver eagle on the street for $5....no one took the offer.
