A 31-year-old New Orleans woman who walked out of the Orleans Parish jail lock-up on Monday Nov 23, 2009 was apprehended a day later by criminal sheriff's deputies at an eastern New Orleans apartment building.
Torie T. Smith's jail break was hardly the stuff of a hard thought out plan.
She was able to leave the jail's Intake and Processing Center after two steel doors were left open by a police officer who had entered the facility just moments before,

Smith was brought into the jail about two hours before her escape. She was being booked with aggravated battery in connection with an incident involving her boyfriend, She has been there in the jail for many, many things in the past.

A videotape of the escape released by Criminal Sheriff Marlin Gusman showed that on Monday Nov 23, 2009 just before 4:40 p.m., an unidentified New Orleans police officer failed to lock two doors that lead to the jail lock-up's central holding area. That officer had booked another suspect about 45 minutes earlier and was trying to quickly retrieve an affidavit he had left with the jail paperwork, Gusman said.
Torie Smith, who escaped as she was being booked into Orleans Parish Prison, has been captured.
"I think what happened is he was in a rush and he didn't want to be slowed down," Gusman said. "She was probably watching him and then able to exit when the opportunity arose."

NOPD spokesman Bob Young said the department's Public Integrity Bureau will look at the officer's actions. He declined to release the officer's name unless the division decides to launch an "official investigation."
In the tape, which shows the room just outside the jail where officers transfer custody of the people they arrest to jail deputies, the NOPD officer can be seen entering the facility and holding the outside door behind him and slowly closing it. The officer did not fully close the door and prevented the locking mechanism from engaging, Gusman said.

The officer did the same thing with the interior door. About a minute later, Smith, who had told jail workers she was going to the bathroom, can be seen approaching a door leading to the transfer room. She pushed that door open, walked through, and then quickly pushed open the outside door of the jail building.
Running down the 2800 block of Perdido Street, Smith can be seen beginning to scale an outside Sally Port fence. The rest of Smith's breakout was obscured in the video shown by Gusman until after Smith was over the fence and running down Perdido Street.
A nurse who works at the jail and saw Smith climbing the Sally port fence alerted deputies.

Smith was apprehended at the Huntington Park Apartments on Crowder Boulevard on Tuesday afternoon, according to the sheriff's office. She was re-booked into jail on the battery charge, as well as an additional simple escape charge.
Including Smith and a community service inmate who walked away from a detail, there have been five jail escapes this year. In two separate incidents, three inmates have escaped from the temporary jail tents. Two inmates in the summer 2009 escaped from the House of Detention. All of the inmates were eventually recaptured.
Gusman said one factor in the escapes is that his office has had to use temporary facilities while working to construct permanent jail buildings to replace the ones destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. "No escape is acceptable," he said. "Every time something like this happens, we take the necessary measures to prevent it from happening again."

Well..... MAYBE if they locked the doors at the jail this would not happen. If you are not going to lock the doors at the jail. Why even have a jail?
The N.O. police Chief later said that it was the Sheriff Departments job to keep the jail locked.
Showing again N.O.P.D stands for New Orleans Police Department but also stands for
"Lock the doors of the jail after we walk in them?"

  • Update on Jan-26-2010 her charge of AGGR BATTERY & SIMPLE ESCAPE was REFUSED

Guess even that they had tape of her escape they had to refuse it seeing they never did ID the cop that left the doors open & he did not want his name out Calling it "SIMPLE ESCAPE" TY 2 him it was

From what we can tell Torie Smith has not been back 2 OPP (Yet) Even that it is her 2st home.for all kinds of things. Now w/ her escape even on You Tube she has shown that they cannot hold her (LOL) so way bother to go back?

  • I like that NOPD (Not Our Problem Dude) bit. It got me thinking about NYPD (Now,its Your Problem, Dude) and I thought her timing was perfect, either she was watching and waiting for the perfect opportunity from somewhere off camera, or she just got damn lucky.

  • @ValerieBarlow She was watching. From what they say and if you look her up jail is her 2st home. And everyone knows how lazy all the police are every where Don't they?

  • So??? She was probably sodomized by the guards anyway, for living while black.

  • @fifthworld Well maybe the guards were seeing 95% of the guards inside OPP are also black You know this is why some ppl hate you all so much

Same old same No matter what it is you have to try to bring up your race & find something to fight about

You cannot just enjoy this & LOL like anyone else You have to for some reason bring race into it

Most people are sick of the Poor Black me stuff

Why can't you just enjoy what this woman did like anyone else has?

this nothing to do with race

  • im her little brother

  • @zackaryboysrule1 Send her our love & Tell her "Hi, from You Tube" & we have been enjoying her

She has brought whites & blacks LOL together in the city of N.O. something the mayors can't do

When she gets out maybe she should run for mayor next time or city council.

She can't have a record longer then some of the ppl voted into office

Her 6 plus months for escape should be up soon. Have her report back how many Xs they check the doors after she walks in

Hope she makes to Momma's next time

  • @flycentro123 What I'm saying is many, if not most of those statistics borrow from statistical data that INCLUDES the number of children raised in fatherless homes. This does not go to say that 1) Their father is absent from their life or 2) that these fathers run away from responsibility. Their are statistics that show children raised in 2 parent homes are better off. That's fine, my beef is the illusion that these children are fatherless because the truth is they aren't.

  • @flycentro123 HAve you stopped to ask yourself how those figures were determined? I know the way they were determined and why they are not credible. But because that case validates your point, you refuse. I'm only interested in the truth. I know plenty of black people and none of them are without a father. Except the few whose parents died in car accidents or cancer or something. Other than that... no. That's just me, I understand, however purely based on facts. You're wrong.

  • @PhantomLyric What the hell are you talking about? Patrick Monihyan in 1968 went before congress to say there was a problem in the black community when children were being born to single mothers in 28 % of black households.. that number is now at 73 % !! for you to say that the absent black father is a myth, only suggests you live in a dreamworld or a fucking idiot.

  • @flycentro123 Never implied that the racial injustice on youtube had anything to do with being violent and drug addicted. Crimes that, incidentally, are more common among whites. The absent black father is a myth. Many statistics were taken from a small group and often used a woman's marital status as a sign that the black father was absent. -- However, what I did say was, the negativity we see here is a mere reflection on the society we live in. Let it go.

  • @PhantomLyric HA Ha,, yeah thats why black people are violent, drug addicted, no daddy producing varmin !!! because people make mean comments on youtube about them... thanks for my morning laugh :-)

  • perhaps she left the oven on and forgot to off it, so she was just returning to he kitchen

  • Where was Steven seagal. Lol he would judo chopped her ass. Lol

  • It was (is) the unofficial policy of the Sheriff's department to leave the doors ajar because they didn't want to have to buzz people in and out, or have to find someone with the keys. The officer made the mistake of doing what the sheriff's department does every day. I can guarantee he doesn't do that any more. Smith was brought in about 24 hours later.

Central lock-up is a mess. NOPD isn't perfect, but neither is the NOSD.

  • people cry about the economy but can't do their job.

even one as easy as work in a jail.

  • GOOD FOR HER! RUN, GIRL, RUN!
