I'm not very versed in the Valkyrie Profile games... What's sin for? Is it something good, or something bad?

In this, it's actually good.
The more sin you get, the more points in the after battle bonus, which leads to greater rewards. You can get some very very high-quality equipment by getting close to double the required minimum.
It made a bit more sense in the Japanese version, where it was just called "karma".
