Since 1979 Clayton Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City's Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge he's recorded a dark and colorful society, from drag to hardcore, heroin, homelessness, political chaos and ultimately gentrification. His odyssey from voyeur to provocateur reveals that it can take losing everything you love to find your own significance.

I was @ a high school (Seward Park) just 4 blocks down the street from Clayton's store on Essex St. in '86-'88. He had all these awesome hats & caps with designs on them in the window that he created. He was such a cool guy, he'd let my friends & I come in to chill & chat for a bit if we were cutting class, just so the cops wouldn't truant us...but made sure to let us know that we could & should make better choices in our young lives. Not many more like this man down there today...

My feet were killing me and I went to a screening for this. I stood in the back and was planning to leave the whole time but couldnt take my eyes off the screen! great documentary!!

America will sell anything to anybody, as long as it makes some fat cat rich. We keep saying we are free in America, but we are free only as long as we keep buying what the coporations tell us to buy. If we get too poor to buy or pay taxes, people like Mayor Bloomberg buy tickets for us to go some place else.

"Little brother watching big brother" I like that and that's what I do I am 16 live in NJ and hang in NY and always have my Hi8 camera on me (Battery broke few days ago =P) or some type of camera to document what go's on. I think of my camera as the worlds eyes in my hand and THAT'S a lot of power that's why I love what I do.
