Even more amazing was being in a "mud storm"--the rain started during a dust storm and as it was only a short shower, we weren't rained on as the rain turned to mud before it hit the ground (several years ago). West Texas is certainly an experience!

The dust storms in Lubbock now usually aren't as bad as this one. This is a combination of a severe drought in Texas/Oklahoma combined with a strong arctic cold front that was blowing in.

Ever heard of the Dust Bowl?
During the great depression some of the productive agricultural farms in this country as well as canada faced severe droughts resulting in dry dust in the soil. Strong winds natural to the areas where the farms would from time to time blow the dust across the region darkening the sky and burying those farms. It is said that some of the dust reached as far as the each coast.
Texas has undergone a drought of its own and appears to be facing a similar threat.

That's crazy stuff, are these dust storms normal in Texas? Used to live in Miami and when the Everglades were burning there was a blanket of fog/smoke that was at ground level sort of like this dust storm.

@ReporterWorldNews I think they occur from time to time since Lubbock is located on a plateau. Very high winds cause all of this.
