s/v Araby sailing into Caroline Island (or Millennium Island, southern Kiribati).. Few boats have ever sailed through this blind pass of Caroline Island, like a cul-de-sac. Maybe as few as five in the last fifteen years. The seas are often confused and the visibility poor. I had a friend, Hugh, up on his spreaders and at anchor, directing me in on the VHF; you can hear him in the background. Herbert is commentating.

  • Kadid - Not that funny how things work out ... and what is your point? Most cruisers are white and western, mostly retired, mostly wealthy ... but not all! Should I not sail because I am "European/white american"? ... I'm just doing the best I can with who I am and would support anyone else who cared to do similarly. I think I know what you are implying... but I don't see how that way of looking at the world is helping you to sail. Most are as you say ... but not all.

  • Thanks for the advice dragongirl. I know most of those books and my partner spent two years living in Kiribati, a name I'm sure you recognize. I like Shapiro and Bryson, even if I haven't read as much of their works as I would like. Thanks for the interest. Namaste.

  • I found the conditions better than Ron did most of the time, but it was still terrifying. I loved that book; your the first person I've ever heard of that has read it.

  • I've seen pictures of this Caroline Island place and it looks absolutely incredible. See what happens when humans don't touch something? Anyways, did you guys actually go on the island? If so, I'd love to hear about it.

  • I wonder how many people who sail around the ocean in their yachts are anything but european/white americans....Im guessing zero. funny how that works out...

  • i also bought the Together Alone book. I cant wait for it to arrive! this place looks fascinating! Suggested reads: Sex Lives of Cannibals, Getting Stoned with Savages both by Maartan Troost, and another book Im also waiting on is: "A Sense of Place: Great Travel Writers Talk About Their Craft, Lives, and Inspiration (Travelers' Tales)" by Michael Shapiro. oh and anything by Bill Bryson! preferrably: 'In a Sunburned Country'. (his trip to Australia)...AWESOME!

  • that's my boy!

  • I read Ron Falconer's book "Together Alone", so I can relate to this video.
