Today would have been her 85th birthday, but we lost her in March this year. Always remembered with love and affection, a sunny personality with a great sense of fun. Born in Pimlico, London 16 July 1923 the 2nd daughter of Lily Drawwater and Percy William Bailey, she lived with them and her grandparents at 61 Glamorgan Street. Her siblings were Dot, May, Eve and Percy. Lily died in childbirth when she was 8 and her grandmother Mary Elizabeth Bailey (formerly Chapman, from the village of Little Walsingham, Norfolk) took over her upbringing. Her grandfather Samuel Bailey was a carpenter who originally came from Sparham in Norfolk. Tragedy struck the family again in 1939 when younger sister May died at the age of 17. Hilda worked at the Army and Navy stores in London and was there when the first air raid took place in London during WW2. She was evacuated to Bath as she was pregnant with her first child (although she and my grandfather Arthur Ronald Blackman didn't tie the knot until he returned from active service in 1945). The family moved from London in the 1950s and she spent the remainder of her life in Sussex. She and my grandad had 6 children together and though they split in the 1960s she always thought of him as the love of her life. She is missed by her family and will never be forgotten by us. We love you Nan xxx.
