HM's STM was intact. It was his LTM which was severely affected by the surgery, leaving him unable to access new LTMs.

Some corrections: KF damaged his left parieto-occipital region in his brain and suffered from STM deficit. HM, after hippocampus and other mediotemporal lobe operation, suffered from LTM deficit.
