"thought / i"
(10 min version of a 25 minute long performance)
In this solo performance Erikk McKenzie attempts to share his personal outlook on the rational and materialist age we most probably are witnessing the end of. Since Descartes declared "I think, therefore I exist", our Western culture has obsessively emphasized thought as the only valid way of understanding reality, and thus demystified all that cannot be rationally or scientifically explained. We have created an individualized society emptied of higher meaning, a dogmatic belief in technological progress, were the daily violation of natural life is exiled into our subconscious minds, constantly distracted by entertainment and consume. Who am I when I peel away my thoughts ?
This is the completion of the process I started with the performance "Cartesian Ghost", produced with support from Regional Arena for Samtidsdans (NO) and Danswerkplaats (NL).
The recordings were done at Sandnes Kulturhus 2009 and at Dansens Hus (Oslo) in 2010.
