Louis Armstrong was the most famous Jazz musician in history. His influences as trumpeter, singer, band leader, composer, ever movie actor are undeniable. A good thing that New Orleans named his airfield after their most wellknown musician.
As a trumpetter Louis was the original and creative genious of the 1920's and beyond. His famous hot five and hot seven recordings display his growing improvisational skill. Nobody could do what Louis could at that time, nobody even came close.
At the same time he was the most important male jazz singer in his era. Recording world hits till even in the 1960's. Several recordings landed high in the pop charts even many years after his death. For scat singing he had no competition to speak of.
As a band leader he was the first to be a star backed by a big band, starting an idea that would be copied by many famous jazz musicians like Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, the Dorsey brothers, Cootie Williams, Harry James and a long long list of names behind them.
Louis was also (co) composer of many pieces that became jazz standards, like Big Butter and Egg Man, Canal Street Blues, Someday You'll Be Sorry and many others. Numbers that are played every day now somewhere on this planet.
Later in his career he became parttime movie actor, saving pictures like High Society, that would certainly have been much less succesfull if Louis wouldn't have been in it. His charm, inspirational happyness and musicianship were simply electrifying.

  • I was on your concert on 10th July. It was the best of all the festival in my opinion! You're really great!

  • You guys are really GREAT! You have the greatest compositions and sound amazing everytime! Keep up the great playing!

  • You're a true virtuoso.

I'm still figuring out different melodies from ear instead of reading them.
