Upper extremity sensory complaints include a differential diagnosis of nerve root entrapment or irritation vs. peripheral nerve entrapment. Succeful treatment is based on an accurate diagnosis. The motor, reflex and sensory testing is always supported by orthopedic tests and, potentially, electrodiagnosis.

  • The radial n does supply the back of the hand. Understanding the pure patch location allows for differntiating a nv root problem from a peripheral n problem. C6 overlaps the radial area as well. Pure patch sensory loss suggests the peripheral n lesion as opposed to the n root, but in clinical context, you would confirm this with motor and reflex texting. I hope this helps...

  • Can you explain the MRS of the the Radial Nerve, with the sensory deprivation of the Pure zone on the dorsal aspect of the hand with a little more detail?? I feel like I am missing something. Radial is exclusively sensory on the dorsal aspect of the hand, correct?
