Bet you never knew about THIS Mario sport, didja?
-------
(Well, unless you beat Mario Party 4, got all the mini-games, etc., etc.)
Me and my lovely (and no doubt willing) teammate, Peach, take to the sands in a no holds barred 'bout of... Volleyball. Sounds weird, and it is for a "Mario Party", BUT, they do a pretty darned good job with it! It doesn't quite feel like a regular mini-game, it has a bit more thought in it. I mean, sure, Peach is still in a ball-gown type dress (y'know, she wears that when SWIMMING?), but that's besides the point (...and it just adds to the goofball nature of the whole thing!).
Everybody has unique animations for sets/volley/spikes and the like; even the controls are quite a bit more complicated, and they don't even explain it all to you. Like, pressing the joystick in a direction when you are spiking allows you to aim where it goes - but you still have to remember to press "A" to spike it before the ball passes you by!
What's going on here, is a "Tournament" which pits you against all the other playable characters in this game. You have to complete it, first, before you can play "Free Mode", and it's NOT easy. I win, yeah, but this was not my first try. The things holding you back are how tough the competing computer's AI is (sometimes it seems they cannot miss the ball) and whether you and your teammate are playing the same game. For example, you're playing up at the net, and your teammate decides to run up and block the ball instead of holding back should you miss YOUR block.
Also, there's a tricky thing about blocking, one of three things can happen: You miss the ball, you return the ball, or you "tip" the ball back on your own side. Possibilities one and two are great! If you hit it back, you've likely got a point, if you miss it, it's easy for your teammate to figure out where it will land and cover your back. If you TIP it, the trajectory onto your side changes, and likely, your teammate was trying to cover you for the initial landing point so they've then got to scramble to reach the other spot. Fortunately, the computer is fairly proficient at managing this; good thing too, seeing that more often than not, you'll tip the ball than return/miss it. 'sides, I like playing the net. One other thing to keep in mind about the CPU teammate, though, is sometimes they'll save the ball and stay standing in the crosshairs, meaning you can't get to it. It doesn't happen much, but when it DOES...!
So, yeah. Great fun, this. Adds another sport to Mario's repertoire!
God. I cant believe something that small(koopa) can jump so freakin high!

Well, they all have to reach the same height, otherwise it would be unfair for some characters, huh? This means, the smaller jump higher in relation to the larger guys.

I wonder what Mario Extreme Volleyball would be like

Aw man, now I have images of them spiking with a fire in their eyes a la "Mario Strikers".

Dang Eel, you make this look easy!
I remember how the Bowser and Baby Bowser team were so hard to beat. I mean just look at how fast they move!
Can only computer players dive for the ball? I never saw you dive for it, and now that I think about it, I can't recall if humans could.

Sure you can, it's just not something you can reliably pull off. I mostly played by the net, anyway. (...and trust me, I had my fair share of troubles before this run!)
