Most people teach down by having the dog sit first, then luring the dog into a down. In this video I go over a different method to teach down that will allow the dog to learn it from starting in a standing position. This is especially useful if you plan on doing obedience or rally obedience with your dog! I also try to stay away from luring as much as possible because when you lure the dog is reliant on you to put them in a position, whereas if you just capture or shape behaviors you've got a dog that can think for themselves!

I originally taught Roxy to do down by using the luring method, so this video shows me reteaching her. You will see a difference in the way she does down in the beginning of the video and how she does down at the end.

  • I really like how you demonstrate getting the behavior FIRST, then adding a cue after you're sure the behavior will follow. Good training! Good video!

  • Wow, Roland needs to be brushed! I can see his coat is thinning out rapidly for the summer.
