The Rum Diary was not a good novel, it was just okay. HST never really admitted to himself that his real talent was for journalism. He wanted to be an 'artist' as do many journos. He finally got the novel out of his system but it's not going to go down in history except as a curiosity and as a key to the man, being like so many first novels, highly autobiographical under the skin

William Kennedy: underrated genius. Apparently, even underrated by viewers of this clip. Yeah, Hunter's great, but his fans remind me of Vonnegut fans. Two great writers, but their fans seem to have very limited knowledge of just how many great writers there are out there. Put down The Great Shark Hunt for a minute and seek out William Kennedy. You won't be disappointed.
