Major Thomas Dry Howie the "Major of St-Lo", was the man Tom Hanks portrayed in "Saving private Ryan." A graduate of the Citadel and english professor and footbal coach at Staunton Military Academy,his National Guard unit was activated for WW2. He died liberating the French town of St-Lo, and is memorialized by the town with a church plaque, and huge granite monument.

  • Very good Geof- St. Lo's memorial is a firm reminder of the greatness, sacrifices and honor in World War II that America is still remembered for around the world.

    What a difference from then to now. That memorial to a fallen American stands in stark contrast to many insults the French sustained from the likes Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld as those men lied us into a phony war while our true friends, the French, warned us against it.
