  • Almost right, cadmunkey, if I read your comment correctly. They would continue to push ahead on what is called the "outside arc" propellar, in this case it's the port side propellar. The starboard propellar would be pulling astern to slow the ship down and help twist her around. This is called "twin screwing". But then again, I guess that is what you ended up explaining anyways...

  • Almost that simple bagelboi, generally you approach and give a hard starboard rudder, then reverse the inside screw while the outer is still going ahead, this allows water to remain passing over one rudder which allows you to maintain some sort of control of the ship while the shaft that is now going astern pulls the ship backwards, balancing the power both shafts while allow you to creep forwards or backwards and still maintain steering to some degree.

  • I'm always amazed by how easy they make it look maneuvering the ship the way they do. For docking here did they just turn the rudder to port and reverse the screws?
