Jim Stynes is no stranger to overcoming extreme tests.

For him, a challenge has always been something he would go in search of. Like rising to the top of a sport, he never grew up playing.

Or leading the oldest club in the AFL back from the brink of extinction. Even uncovering a teenager's gift to the person most blind to it -- themselves.

Jim chooses challenges. Until 2009... when one chose him.

saw it last night on tv, myself and wife and my little 9 year old boy were close to tears, what an inspiration of a man, i felt so pathetic watching jim go through his troubles realising the petty things i had been moaning about during the day in and out of work, respect and love to jim ,his wife and two little kids, you have made us all stop and think for a few seconds as to just how precious health and life is to all of us, your in our thoughts buddy.

See this is what I mean, no human is perfect but at this time surely it is ok to celebrate things that made life better. I know many have cancer now, pets as well as people, and yes somewhere today another service is taking place for someone, but he did a lot of things that were good yet some want to start bitching. As the Minister said in the service he was HUMAN, as we all are, not perfect. Good on him for having a go at changing lives instead of destroying them.

I'm a bit annoyed at the Age's comments so soon regarding Jim's use of alternative medicines and treatments. It is important to debate such issues, but really if it helped him for more time to spend with everyone than what's the problem? I'm not saying don't stop chemo etc, but if those other treatments helped then surely that is a good thing? We live in an age where the media finds fault; at the end, Jim tried and he did his best on this earth and made it better as he could; surely celebrate it

Just another example of its not how much money you throw at a cause that makes a difference its the people behind it. Cancer has touched neally every family either directly or indirectly and the support Reach and other organisations (McGrath Foundation for example) is invaluable.Hope Jims up there still watching his beloved Demons. Just a small touch of irony, Jim the angel cheering the Demons.Reckon he would have convinced the BIG MAN upstairs to wear the Red and Blue by now

I know its not right to judge people, at the end of the day I suppose we all do our best, but so many celebrities (sports and music stars) have nothing better to offer but a bad clothing range or perfume or worse a bad drug habit - can you imagine what the world would be like if just 1% of these celebs could emulate what Jim did? An ex-GAA player here was so inspired by Jim he set up an Irish version of reach. So he is changing lives all the time...how cool is that!
