At first, the artistic alliance of Oscar and Grammy award-winning composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz with operatic soprano Lauren Flanigan seems unlikely, but the seeds of their eventual collaboration were actually planted in the beginnings of their respective careers forty years ago, when Schwartz wrote the score for the hit musical Godspell and Flanigan, then 12 years old, made her debut in a production of Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw. Without revealing too much about Séance on a Wet Afternoon, Schwartz's opera starring Flanigan (since both insisted it should remain a surprise until after the run at New York City Opera this month), they reveal a great deal about themselves, the creative process, and the state of both musical theatre and opera today.
