Just a few days ago my Sony Vaio's Hard drive: Seagate Momentus ST9250827 AS 250 GB 5400.4 RPM crashed and started making this sound.
If you are facing the same problem then dont worry Data recovery is possible and you can do it by your own and save around $1000 of data recovery. I recovered the data by plugging it into an external USB enclosure. But remember this can be done only once and there's 85-90% chance that your drive will be dead after that because this what happened to mine..
I have blogged about this @ dreadbob.blogspot.com and learn how you can recover your data .
@Diamondo25 I have one WDC that hasn't failed. A 1997 Caviar that's 4GB. It was in regular use moderately from 1997-2003.

@h1n1viruz Okay, I'll write shorter: 2 / 3 of my WDC DRIVES FAILED ON ME. They were treated perfectly. I almost lost my fucking data. I don't buy such drives anymore, fuck you.

@h1n1viruz Fuck that, my WD 2.5" early-mid 2009 MANF.,died just over a year and corrupted my data, should have heard for a few seconds that son of a bitch grind like it was trying to commit suicide (My Blue Caviar 3.5" SATA just over 3 years old just did this recently too, only it still mounts, just reads at like fucking 20MBs a second and has bad sectors). Thankfully I had what was on that thing JUST backed up. My Seagate 2.5" doing great, enjoy your "perfect" drives, WDC boy. I'm done with WD!
