Duke, with Johnny Hodges at this side, had the ability to play the blues so transparently without it sounding like they were playing what many would consider "the blues". All the listener would know (or should care about) was the beautiful sound flowing from the orchestra. Duke knew that. In the end, that's all that really matters. The studio recording of this song is a masterpiece. Every time I hear it: I feel warm, good, and my mind just simply transcends. Ellington is something else.

Love me some Johnny Hodges. Sweet, smooth, and strong at the same time. Btw, I've always loved Duke's piano playing. The more I listen the more I hear his influence on Theolonius Monk.

l Got It Bad And That Ain't Good is my favorite tune that he plays.

@matoflash Yeah I know, I'm not saying that one is better than the other, there's definitely things i love about both Cannonball and Hodges but I'm just saying personal choice I enjoy Cannonball more, but I think Hodges has been getting to me lately :)

@EliFriederz How can one even compare these two persons? It is like comparing a watermelon and say... a peach! Both are fruit, but no one can really tell which one is objectively better than the other one. It is a matter of personal choice, but you cannot compare (in the means of better or worse) somebody that different in style. All the jazz greats are up there on the same one big pedestal.

They are by no means the student brand you see today. It's an old decked out pro model, but they still weren't much. Hodges could make anything sound good, really...
The great thing about Mr. Hodges is he stayed true to him. What makes him the greatest is he pulls you in, gives you a feeling, and all without a bunch of nothing, its all the soul, understanding, and passion one needs to endure. Give a list of Players afer him and they will all list him as a early hero, and tat there says it. It's Sunday, and this is a day for Johnny Hodges.
