As for your first question, YES, you do have to take off the side fan, sadly.

*Better don't even bother buying this crap "pls".
*This unit's pipe broke and spilled liquid on my expensive equipment "pls".
*Might as well spend your money on a Noctua NH-D14 "pls".
*I have a Prolimatech Megahalems CPU Cooler which is ages better than this thing "pls".
I think you get the idea now. Either go for the ECO or a Prolimatech, Noctua, or Thermalright CPU cooler. This unit is old and worthless.
