Matte Painting
BBC's Horizon looks at ILM and visual effects. This show is from 1985 and is a true gem. I thought it would be important and educational to show the interesting bits of the show, focusing on subjects such as optical printing, matte painting and even rotoscoping.
This is part 2 dealing with matte paintings.

  • Awesome, but for those who think that VFX is a button click nowadays, you know nothing.

I work in the industry and it's still a shiteload of work, computers are still just a tool.

  • @ Ewok matte painting: Incredible, the amount of work they went in for that one matte painting, and look at it now with today's technology... you can do that whole shot without taking your ass off the chair, amazing how far we've come. Thanks a alot for uploading this .... going to d/l the full movie.

  • When you watch behind-the-scenes stuff about CGI, you're just watching behind-the-scenes stuff about CGI. This blew my mind.

  • Back when ILMers actually got off their asses for a living. Oh, the good ol' days...

  • Amazing work! Who knew that last Indy shot was a matte painting? I thought it was a real warehouse.

  • Holy FUCKING Shit! To paint such gigantic paintings.. soooo realistically.. with such details..on GLASS.. Even modern painters cant do such shit! Everyone making too Photoshoppy and too CG... Thats just amazing...

  • That's some amazing stuff. Quite inspiring with such a process.
