Heres a 4G63 engine with a spun rod bearing. I am posting this so people can hear the difference. This is often confused with Lifter tick. If you suspect rod bearing failure, check your oil for gold flakes.

  • What is actually going on inside when this happens? Isn't it very bad to run it in this condition?

  • @KyleClyne The bearings are breaking down till there is nothing left. Metal to metal starts happening. Yes very bad to run in this condition. When this happens there is no choice but to do a teardown and rebuild the engine. So at the point of this video not much worst could happen. I took the opportunity to show others because many confuse this noise for the hydraulic lifters.

  • Hey thanks for this man. I thought mine was either lash adjusters or something more serious. Mine sounds like this (video response) which after listening to yours, tells me mine is lash adjusters.

  • @tonyscarfacemontana Responded to your video response. (Sounds like lifters)

  • ok so i think my 95 talon tsi awd spun a rod bearing yesterday.... but heres the thing im not a great mechanic myself well never had the chance to be anyways. i think i spun a rod bearing but when i start my car it sounds normal or very close to normal i dont think i can hear the tick/knock at idle other then the 2g lifters that always tick but then i hardly hit the throttle and i hear that ugly klunky noise anyone can tell me if this is rod bearing or not since it dont do it at idle

  • @4G63DSMPOWER Th easiest way to tell if your rod bearing or any bearing fasiled in the bottom end is by checking your oil. Drain the oil in a container and look for gold metal flakes. Also take off your oil filter and cut it open and look for metal flakes. If you find gold, you are now poor lol You gonna have to rebuild the bottom end. hope that helps.

  • @talon4wd thanx. well when i pull my dipstick to check the oil there are minimal flakes but flakes at all is no good so im pretty darn positive it is. got the car parked now just need to save up a bit of money and will pull and rebuild the dam thing with help from two friends 1 who is dsm friendly and another just mechanical friendly in general. thanx for the help/advice

  • @chriszelaya I had a spare engine that lasted a yr before exploding and making 4 holes in the block, but later rebuilt this engine with another crank and rods with all new ACL Tri metal bearings. Not much...because I had spare parts (another crank and bought rods)

  • @talon4wd how much did this caused you?

  • @starionluvr Yep. Dismantled the engine and had to replace the crank, rod #1 and all bearings.
